Last night’s academy awards was everything you would expect from the ceremony: pomp, some jokes, some great speeches and obvious winners in the best picture category. Except it wasn’t. Just when I was about to turn off the TV and call it a night, a stagehand comes rushing on stage and the real winner is announced: Moonlight.
When your backups fail
Turns out Price Water House Coopers keeps two sets of identical envelopes on each side of that stage, just in case someone enters either stage left or right they get the envelope and go on to announce the winner. Instead of getting the best picture nominee Warren Beatty gets the prior Oscar for best actress, Emma Stone and La La Land. No fun when you realize your backup has caused mayhem.
